Farmland Advantage (FLA)

The Farmland Advantage Program (FAP) is a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiative designed to support farmers and ranchers in British Columbia (BC) who actively protect and enhance ecosystem services on their lands.
  • IAF
Overview of the Farmland Advantage (FLA) program:

The Farmland Advantage Program encourages and rewards farmers and ranchers for preserving and enhancing the ecosystem services that their lands naturally provide. These services include: Water purification: Wetlands filter contaminants and improve water quality. Carbon sequestration: Grasslands and forests capture and store carbon dioxide, helping to mitigate climate change. Biodiversity conservation: Riparian areas, grasslands, and other natural habitats provide critical shelter for wildlife and fish species, including those at risk. Air purification and erosion control: Trees and vegetation reduce air pollution and protect soil integrity. The program identifies priority areas and works with producers to develop and implement Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to their land. Common activities supported by the program include: Establishing riparian buffers to protect watercourses. Installing strategic fencing to manage livestock and protect sensitive areas. Reforestation and thinning to restore forest health. Removing debris to reduce wildfire risk. Implementing rotational grazing practices to enhance soil and plant health. The program also engages with First Nations communities and restoration organizations to ensure that culturally significant areas and natural habitats are preserved or restored. Farmers are compensated annually for their efforts to maintain and enhance these ecosystem services.

Benefits of the Farmland Advantage (FLA) program:
  • Environmental Stewardship: Encourages actions that support cleaner watersheds, healthier wildlife populations, and conservation of critical habitats.
  • Climate Change Mitigation: Implements practices that sequester carbon and improve ecosystem resilience to climate change.
  • Financial Support: Offers annual payments to agricultural producers for maintaining ecosystem service enhancements.
  • Sustainability: Promotes sustainable farming practices that balance agricultural productivity with environmental preservation.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborates with First Nations and restoration groups to implement culturally and environmentally significant practices.
Eligibility criteria of the Farmland Advantage (FLA) program:
  • General Eligibility Requirements
  • Location: Applicants must own or manage agricultural lands in British Columbia.
  • Land Use: Lands must overlap with high-priority areas such as riparian zones, grasslands, wetlands, or forests that provide valuable ecosystem services.
  • Commitment: Participants must be willing to implement prescribed BMPs and restoration activities as outlined in their management plan.
  • Collaboration: Applicants must work closely with program advisors and restoration partners to achieve project goals.
  • Specific Requirements
  • Agricultural lands must demonstrate potential for providing or enhancing ecosystem services.
  • Applicants must agree to long-term maintenance of the implemented practices to ensure the sustained benefits of the program.
