The Future Fisher Program is a funding opportunity which provides assistance to new entrants in the lobster fishery in Prince Edward Island in order to equip them with skills and knowledge that they can use to build up their fishery businesses.

Overview of the Future Fisher Program program:

Future Fisher Program is a funding opportunity administered by the Prince Edward Island Provincial Department of Fisheries which aims to help new entrants or individuals in the lobster fishery industry. The funding grant covers fees for trainings, workshop, and coaching activities, as well as financial support to reduce the interest or cost of acquiring lobster license and other fishing related assets.

Benefits of the Future Fisher Program program:
  • A maximum of $4,000 per year for a period of three years, which sums up to $12,000, can be acquired through their interest relief component which reduces the the interest costs for fishing operations obtained by the applicants.
Eligibility criteria of the Future Fisher Program program:
  • To participate in the Future Fisher program, you must:
    • Be a resident of Prince Edward Island and be a minimum of 18 years of age.
    • Have purchased a Class A lobster license after January 1, 2009, (as recognized by the PEI Provincial Department of Fisheries) and have not held a Class A lobster license in previous years.
    • Only one applicant will be accepted per fleet under the Future Fisher Program, and this shall be the license holder.
