The Starter Company Plus Program is delivered by the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre and funded by the Government of Ontario. It is aimed at entrepreneurs aged 18 or older who are not currently in school and are interested in launching, expanding, or purchasing a business in the Waterloo Region. This program provides a comprehensive suite of supports, including: Business skills development training Mentorship and advisory support Opportunities for networking and peer learning A potential grant of up to $5,000 Participants selected for the program attend a mandatory five-week business skills development training program, which includes both in-person and virtual sessions. Topics covered include business planning, financial literacy, marketing strategies, and operations management. Participants also receive one-on-one mentorship and coaching sessions tailored to their specific business needs. The program culminates in a business plan and financial forecast submission and a grant pitch presentation to a panel of reviewers. Successful candidates may receive up to $5,000 in funding to assist in business start-up, expansion, or acquisition costs. The program is offered through competitive intake rounds and space is limited.

Eligibility criteria of the Starter Company Plus Program - Waterloo program:

  • Be not currently enrolled in full-time education
  • Be starting, expanding, or purchasing a business located in Waterloo Region
  • Be operating the business on a full-time basis
  • Be prepared to attend all sessions of the five-week training program
  • Submit a business plan and 2-year cash flow forecast
  • Deliver a business pitch to a grant review panel
  • Have not received a Starter Company or Starter Company Plus grant previously
  • Not currently participating in another provincially funded entrepreneurship program
