2 Billion Trees Program

The 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program, initiated by the Government of Canada, aims to plant two billion trees over a decade, contributing to climate change mitigation and biodiversity enhancement.
  • Natural Resources Canada
Overview of the 2 Billion Trees Program program:

Launched in 2021, the 2BT program is a cornerstone of Canada's commitment to nature-based climate solutions. It focuses on: Afforestation: Creating new forest cover on lands currently without trees, such as abandoned areas. Reforestation: Regenerating forests that have temporarily lost tree cover due to natural disturbances like wildfires or commercial activities where replanting isn't legally required. Habitat Restoration: Enhancing forest habitats, particularly for species at risk, through recovery strategies and conservation agreements. The program emphasizes planting the right tree species in appropriate locations to maximize environmental benefits, including carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and improved air and water quality.

Benefits of the 2 Billion Trees Program program:
  • Climate Change Mitigation: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, aiding in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Biodiversity Enhancement: Planting diverse tree species supports various wildlife habitats.
  • Environmental Improvement: Trees improve air and water quality and help regulate urban temperatures.
  • Economic Opportunities: The program creates green jobs and supports the forestry sector.
  • Community Well-being: Increased green spaces enhance recreational opportunities and mental health.
Eligibility criteria of the 2 Billion Trees Program program:
  • The 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program invites applications from various organizations committed to large-scale tree planting initiatives. Eligible applicants include:
  • Organizations: Both for-profit and non-profit entities capable of planting a minimum of 500,000 trees annually.
  • Indigenous Governments/Communities/Organizations: Indigenous groups interested in tree planting and/or capacity-building projects.
  • Note: The program is not currently accepting new applications for the Urban/Suburban Stream. However, organizations aiming to plant trees in urban or suburban areas may seek funding through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Growing Canadas Community Canopies (GCCC) initiative.
