Ontario Child Care Tax Credit

The Ontario Child Care Tax Credit (known as Ontario Childcare Access and Relief from Expenses (CARE) Tax Credit) puts more money in the pockets of families and provides the flexibility they need to choose the child care options that work best for them.
  • Province of Manitoba
Overview of the Ontario Child Care Tax Credit program:

The Ontario Child Care Tax Credit (CARE) is a refundable tax credit designed to help families in Ontario with the costs of child care. The program provides financial relief to eligible families by covering a portion of their child care expenses, making it easier for parents to afford quality child care services while they work, go to school, or train for a new job. The tax credit is aimed at supporting low- to moderate-income families, ensuring that they have access to the care they need for their children.

Benefits of the Ontario Child Care Tax Credit program:
  • Financial Relief: The tax credit covers up to 75% of eligible child care expenses, significantly reducing the out-of-pocket costs for families. This can make child care more affordable, particularly for low- to moderate-income families.
  • Refundable Credit: As a refundable tax credit, even families who owe little or no income tax can benefit, as they may receive a refund for any unused portion of the credit.
  • Flexibility: The credit applies to a wide range of child care options, including licensed daycare, home-based care, and summer camps, giving families flexibility in choosing the type of care that best suits their needs.
  • Support for Working Parents: By helping to cover child care costs, the credit allows more parents to enter or remain in the workforce, pursue educational opportunities, or engage in job training programs.
  • Increased Access to Quality Care: With financial support from the credit, families may be better able to afford higher-quality child care options, contributing to better developmental outcomes for their children.
Eligibility criteria of the Ontario Child Care Tax Credit program:
  • Resident of Ontario: The applicant must be a resident of Ontario at the end of the tax year for which they are claiming the credit.
  • Eligible Child Care Expenses: The credit is available for eligible child care expenses incurred for children under the age of 16, or for children with disabilities, with no age limit. Eligible expenses include fees paid for licensed daycare, caregivers providing child care services, nursery schools, and summer camps.
  • Income Requirements: The amount of the credit is based on the familys net income. The credit covers a higher percentage of child care expenses for families with lower incomes, with the percentage gradually decreasing as income increases.
  • Child Care Expense Deduction: Applicants must also claim the federal Child Care Expense Deduction on their income tax return to be eligible for the Ontario Child Care Tax Credit.
