Sector Support (SEED) - Capital Expansion Incentive

The program provides funding in two categories: Capital Expansion Incentive for NWT businesses investing in new or expanded facilities and equipment, and Sector Research Support for business associations and communities to fund sector research or expansion projects.

Overview of the Sector Support (SEED) - Capital Expansion Incentive program:

The Sector Support Program by the Northwest Territories' Department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment provides financial assistance to various sectors including arts, film, agriculture, and fisheries. The program aims to promote economic growth by supporting projects that enhance market development, industry capacity, and innovation. Eligible applicants include businesses, non-profit organizations, and government entities. Funding is provided for projects that meet specific sectoral goals and can include activities such as market research, training, and equipment purchases.

Benefits of the Sector Support (SEED) - Capital Expansion Incentive program:
  • Under the Sector Research Support category, up to $25,000 may be available to assist with:
  • Sector-specific research or planning that benefits business in that sector by providing information critical to the development of that sector or assisting in investment attraction.
  • Investing in sector-specific product development and related packaging materials and/or sector-specific marketing campaigns.
  • There are minimum Equity Requirements, these are determined by community:
  • Group 1 communities (Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Smith, and Inuvik) 30% of project costs
  • Group 2 communities (all other communities within NWT) 20% of project costs
Eligibility criteria of the Sector Support (SEED) - Capital Expansion Incentive program:
  • NWT Businesses can apply to the Capital Expansion Incentive category while Indigenous organizations, business associations, and municipalities can apply to the Sector Research Support category.
  • In all cases, applicants must be involved in one of the following sectors as designated by the Minister:
  • Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Film
  • Fishing
  • Knowledge Economy
  • Tourism
  • Valueadded Manufacturing
