Overview of the Starter Company Plus Program - Durham program:

The Starter Company Plus Program is a business development initiative provided by the Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD) and funded by the Government of Ontario. It is designed to support entrepreneurs aged 18 and older who are launching, growing, or purchasing a small business in Durham Region. The program includes a combination of hands-on business training, one-on-one guidance, mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs, and the opportunity to apply for a non-repayable grant of up to $5,000. Participants undergo a competitive selection process and must commit to attending mandatory training sessions and submitting a comprehensive business plan, including cash flow projections. Those selected also participate in a pitch presentation before a grant panel. The training covers essential business topics like marketing, operations, business planning, and financial forecasting. The program not only provides financial support but also equips entrepreneurs with critical knowledge and resources to sustain and grow their businesses in Ontario’s competitive landscape.

Eligibility criteria of the Starter Company Plus Program - Durham program:
  • To be eligible for the Starter Company Plus Program, applicants must:
  • Be 18 years or older at the time of application
  • Be a resident of Ontario and legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Not be attending school full-time
  • Be able to dedicate full-time hours to the business
  • Have a business located in Durham Region
  • Be in the process of starting, growing, or buying a small business
  • Not have received a Starter Company or Starter Company Plus grant before
  • Demonstrate the ability to contribute 25% of the grant amount in cash or kind
  • Complete the mandatory training and submit a business plan and 2-year cash flow projection
  • Be available to present a pitch to a grant panel
  • Applicants must also show readiness to launch or grow their business and be committed to its success.
