This retailer assistance program aims to make buildings universally accessible so that any person, regardless of their physical ability, can use retail services independently.

Overview of the Subsidy for Universal Access to Businesses program:

The program promotes universal building accessibility so individuals of all abilities can independently utilize retail services. Owners and tenants of commercial spaces can receive subsidies to remove entrance and exit barriers, enhance indoor mobility, and make bathroom facilities accessible.

Benefits of the Subsidy for Universal Access to Businesses program:
  • Subsidy equal to 90 per cent of the cost of the eligible work, up to a maximum of $15,000.
Eligibility criteria of the Subsidy for Universal Access to Businesses program:
  • To qualify for this program, you must:
  • Be an owner or tenant of a building used for commercial activities, in the Montreal agglomeration.
  • Plan to carry out work intended to make access to the building compliant with the barrier-free design standards set out in the Code or the regulations applicable at the time of application for the subsidy, and execute the work when no access to the building from the street is compliant, other than from an alley way.
  • Obtain confirmation from an authorized professional stating that the building for which the application is submitted met the barrier-free construction standards set out in the Code and the applicable regulations, either at the time of its construction or at the time of the most recent renovation of the building in question.
