Overview of the Trades Training Fund program:

The LNG Canada Trades Training Fund (TTF) is a workforce development initiative funded by LNG Canada and managed by the BC Construction Association. It focuses on increasing the availability of skilled trades professionals in Northwest British Columbia by subsidizing the costs of training for apprentices and workers in high-demand trades. The program primarily supports employers in the region with 150 or fewer employees, enabling them to sponsor apprentices through critical stages of their training. Starting April 1, 2024, the fund will also allow individual applicants without current employer attachment to apply directly for assistance. Eligible costs include tuition fees and textbooks, and funds are paid directly to the training provider. The program serves communities between Prince Rupert and Houston, with an emphasis on fostering a strong pipeline of local journeypersons. By addressing the financial barriers to trade certification, TTF aims to increase apprenticeship completion rates, strengthen community capacity, and prepare the local workforce for opportunities in industries tied to LNG and related sectors. Applications must be submitted at least one month before the training begins to ensure eligibility and availability of funds.

Benefits of the Trades Training Fund program:
  • Financial coverage for training costs up to $2,500 annually.
  • Direct payment of eligible expenses to training providers, removing upfront financial strain.
  • Support for employers in retaining and developing skilled tradespeople.
  • Increased access to training for individuals seeking certifications in high-demand fields.
  • Improved pathways to journeyperson certification and long-term employment stability.
  • Workforce development aligned with regional needs, especially in trades critical to LNG and infrastructure projects.
Eligibility criteria of the Trades Training Fund program:
  • Eligibility criteria include:
  • Location: Applicants must live or work in Northwest BC, specifically between Prince Rupert and Houston along Highway 16.
  • Employer Size: Businesses must have 150 or fewer employees to qualify for employer-sponsored applications.
  • High-Demand Trades: Training must be in one of the eligible trades identified as critical for the region, including construction, administrative services, community support, and professional driving.
  • Applicant Type:
  • For employer-sponsored applications, the employer must be actively supporting an apprentice.
  • For individuals (starting April 1, 2024), applicants must demonstrate their commitment to completing the training independently.
  • Application Timing: Submissions must be made at least one month prior to the class start date.
