Overview of the Nunavut Spend Incentive Program program:

The Nunavut Spend Incentive Program is an initiative by Nunavut Film aimed at promoting film, television, and digital media production within Nunavut. The program offers financial incentives to production companies that choose to shoot their projects in Nunavut, with the goal of boosting the local economy, creating job opportunities, and showcasing the region's unique culture and landscapes. The incentive is structured to support a wide range of productions, from documentaries and feature films to television series and digital media projects.

Benefits of the Nunavut Spend Incentive Program program:
  • Financial Rebates: The program provides rebates on eligible production costs incurred within Nunavut. These rebates can cover up to 27% of eligible costs, making it more affordable for production companies to shoot in the region.
  • Additional Location Bonus: Productions that film in more remote areas of Nunavut can receive an additional 5% location bonus, further increasing the financial benefit and encouraging productions to explore more of the territory.
  • Boost to Production Budget: By offsetting a portion of the production costs, the program helps companies allocate more of their budget to other areas, such as talent, equipment, and marketing, which can enhance the overall quality and success of the project.
  • Support for Local Economy: The incentive encourages production companies to hire local crew, use local services, and invest in the Nunavut economy, contributing to job creation and economic growth in the region.
  • Cultural Exposure: By filming in Nunavut, production companies can capture the unique landscapes, cultures, and stories of the region, contributing to cultural preservation and promoting Nunavut to global audiences.
Eligibility criteria of the Nunavut Spend Incentive Program program:
  • Registered Production Company: The applicant must be a registered production company. Both Canadian and international companies are eligible, but there may be specific requirements regarding the incorporation or co-production agreements.
  • Minimum Nunavut Spend: Productions must spend a minimum of $25,000 on eligible costs within Nunavut to qualify for the incentive. Eligible costs include labor, services, goods, and accommodations that are directly related to the production.
  • Eligible Productions: The program is open to a variety of production types, including feature films, television series, documentaries, digital media projects, and more. The project must have significant content or production activities taking place in Nunavut.
  • Approval Before Production: Applicants must apply for and receive approval from Nunavut Film before commencing production in Nunavut. This ensures that the project meets all program criteria and can qualify for the incentive.
