Alliance Society

The NSERC Alliance Society Grant supports collaborative research projects between academic researchers and partner organizations aimed at solving social, environmental, and economic challenges that benefit Canadian society.
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Overview of the Alliance Society program:

The Alliance Society Grant, administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), funds university researchers collaborating with public, non-profit, and community organizations to co-develop research that advances societal impact in Canada. This program is part of NSERC’s Alliance family of grants, but unlike Alliance Option 1 and 2 (which support mainly industry partnerships), Alliance Society is focused on non-commercial, public-good research. The projects must be aimed at addressing critical social, economic, or environmental issues, such as climate action, public health, reconciliation, equity and inclusion, or regional development.

Benefits of the Alliance Society program:
  • Research grant of $20,000 to $1 million per year for a period of 1 to 5 years.
Eligibility criteria of the Alliance Society program:
  • To qualify for the program, the following criteria must be met:
  • Canadian university researcher either individual or a team with co-applicants provided that all are eligible academic researchers.
  • Must have at least one partner organization (in the private, public or not-for-profit sector) that could be recognized for cost sharing
