The Bitumen Partial Upgrading (BPU) Program, offered by Alberta Innovates, is designed to support technological innovations in Alberta’s oil sands industry. The program focuses on advancing partial upgrading processes that improve the quality of bitumen, making it easier and more economical to transport and refine. This initiative is crucial for reducing transportation costs and increasing the market value of Alberta’s bitumen.

Benefits of the Bitumen Partial Upgrading Program program:
  • Project funding can be up to and typically does not exceed $2 million per project from the Process. The continuous intake programs normally support 25 50% of total project costs, with remaining funding from other project partners and other funding agencies (including cash and in-kind support).
Eligibility criteria of the Bitumen Partial Upgrading Program program:
  • To be eligible for the Bitumen Partial Upgrading Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Location: The project must be based in Alberta and contribute to the provinces oil sands industry.
  • Project Focus: The project must involve the development, field testing, or early-stage commercial deployment of partial upgrading technologies that enhance the value of bitumen.
  • Partnerships: While not mandatory, projects involving partnerships with other industry stakeholders or research institutions are encouraged.
