Overview of the Capacity Building Grants program:

Launched in September 2022, the Oshki Wupoowane | The Blanket Fund is funded by proceeds from the sale of HBC Point Blankets. This initiative acknowledges the historical significance of the blankets while committing to reconciliation and Indigenous empowerment. The Capacity Building Grant provides up to $175,000 annually per organization, with a commitment of up to four years. The grant supports various activities, including creating new programs, expanding geographic reach, growing teams, and strengthening organizational capacity. The grant includes pro-bono services such as HR/finance process improvement, branding, networking opportunities, and program development. The program emphasizes Indigenous leadership, community impact, opportunities for growth, and long-term sustainability. Eligible projects must directly benefit Indigenous people and communities by focusing on cultural, artistic, or educational activities.

Eligibility criteria of the Capacity Building Grants program:
  • Indigenous-led organizations with fewer than six full-time staff and an annual operating budget under $1,000,000.
  • Groups, councils, collectives, and organizations directly serving Indigenous communities.
  • Non-registered organizations require a trustee to administer grant funds.
