Science Horizons Youth Internship Program

This grant offers companies involved in the STEM field 80% to a maximum of $25,000 of the salary to hire graduate students. Also, up to $5,000 for training, skills development, etc.

Overview of the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program program:

This program will help STEM companies hire the talent they need while assisting graduates to gain skills to secure full-time employment by covering the cost of their salary by 80% up to a maximum of $25,000. Additionally, graduates can be eligible for a maximum of $5,000 for training, skills development, etc.

Eligibility criteria of the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program program:
  • These are the requirements to be eligible for this program:
  • A) Graduate students:
    • Not be employed yet by the organization that is receiving this funding
    • 30 y/o or under at the beginning of the internship
    • Have graduated from a post-secondary institution (Canadian or International) *it is not mandatory to be a STEM grad*.
    • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and persons with refugee status in Canada can apply
    • Legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
    • Not receive Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
    • Agree with in-person and virtual midpoints
    • Have not participated in any of The Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Programs targeted at post-secondary graduates.
  • B) Employers:
    • Be for-profit organizations (small- or medium-sized enterprises, corporations, or industry associations)
    • Provincial and territorial, municipal, and local governments including institutions, agencies, and Crown Corporations can apply
    • Post-secondary institutions
    • Organization, including but not limited to non-government organizations, including non-profit organizations, Indigenous organizations, band councils/tribal councils, and local organizations.
  • C) The internship must:
    • Be conducted with a bio-economy or healthcare organization
    • Be in an environment-related STEM field
    • Be full-time with a required duration of 6 to 12 months
    • Supervise and mentor, providing a work environment that is safe, respectful, inclusive, free of harassment, abuse, and discrimination, and complies with all applicable laws
    • Not be funded by another federally-funded program like IRAP, Mitacs, etc.
    • See the participant added to the employers payroll which includes Federal/Provincial tax deductions (CPP, EI, etc.)*
    • Finally, the work experience should meet one of the following additional requirements:
  • Offers skills development and training opportunities
  • Is related to the interests and pursuits of youth
  • Offers a salary that is above the minimum wage
  • Offers opportunities for advancement
  • IIMPORTANT*:
  • Participants must be approved for program participation before starting the internship. This process can take up to 10 business days.
