The Alberta Export Expansion Program (AEEP) is designed to promote Alberta’s global trade by supporting organizations in their efforts to develop new international markets. Administered by the Government of Alberta, the program offers reimbursement-based financial assistance to reduce the costs associated with international market development. Eligible applicants include Alberta SMEs, municipalities, industry associations, Indigenous organizations, and economic development organizations. The funding can be used for a range of international business development activities such as exhibiting at trade shows, attending international business meetings, market entry planning, and translation of marketing materials. AEEP is a reimbursement program covering up to 50% of eligible costs, encouraging proactive and strategic export growth from Alberta. The initiative aligns with Alberta’s broader economic development goals and helps participants tap into new markets, enhance export capabilities, and develop long-term trade relationships abroad.

Eligibility criteria of the Alberta Export Expansion Program program:
  • Be a registered and operating entity in Alberta
  • Be one of the following: small- or medium-sized business (fewer than 500 employees), industry association, Indigenous organization, economic development organization, or municipality
  • Have a permanent establishment in Alberta
  • Be in good standing with all Government of Alberta legislation and regulations
  • Have a viable product, service, or technology with demonstrated market potential
  • Demonstrate a clear export development plan and objectives for each activity
  • Submit application at least 30 days prior to the start of the activity
  • Ensure project completion and expense reporting by fiscal year-end
  • Ineligible applicants include organizations not based in Alberta, businesses primarily focused on local markets, and entities involved in resale of products without value-added contributions.
