Bereavement and Compassionate Care Travel Program

Kivalliq Inuit Association’s Bereavement and Compassionate Care Travel Program provides financial assistance for air travel for a maximum of three family members who wish to attend the funeral of a family member who has died or to help pay for the shipment of the remains of the deceased family member; but not both.

Overview of the Bereavement and Compassionate Care Travel Program program:

Kivalliq Inuit Association’s Bereavement Travel Program provides financial assistance for air travel for a maximum of three (3) family members who wish to visit a family member who is terminally ill and facing imminent death, or travel to attend the funeral of a deceased family member, and for the family members who wish to have the human remains shipped back to the home community

Benefits of the Bereavement and Compassionate Care Travel Program program:

  • Air Travel
  • Shipment of Human Remains
Eligibility criteria of the Bereavement and Compassionate Care Travel Program program:
  • To qualify for this program, the following criteria must be met:
  • Must be immediate family members. Eligible relatives include grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, daughter, son, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, and grandchildren.
  • The immediate family members must be registered Beneficiaries of the Nunavut Agreement (NA).
  • The immediate family members must work together to determine which family members are in most need of assistance.
  • KIA will provide assistance to the individuals selected by the family. Community Liaison Officers (CLO) will assist KIA in this area.
  • Priority will be given to family members over the age of 16.
  • Has been a resident of the Kivalliq region for a least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the day on which he/she votes
