Green Freight Program

Natural Resources Canada's Green Freight Program provides funding to help Canadian trucking companies improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through fleet energy assessments and fuel-saving equipment upgrades.
  • Government of Canada
Overview of the Green Freight Program program:

The Green Freight Program, administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), is a multi-phase initiative supporting Canadian freight transportation companies—particularly those in the medium- and heavy-duty vehicle sector—to transition to cleaner and more efficient operations. The program provides financial incentives to fleets to assess their current fuel usage, identify emission reduction opportunities, and implement approved fuel-saving technologies. It is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs in the freight industry by supporting the adoption of proven, cost-effective technologies and practices. The program is split into phases, with Phase 1 currently open and offering up to 50% reimbursement for fleet energy assessments and the purchase and installation of select fuel-reducing technologies. NRCan maintains a list of eligible technologies and requires that any assessment be conducted by approved professionals. The overarching goal of the program is to increase energy efficiency while supporting Canada’s climate targets. NRCan also provides educational materials and data collection tools to assist participants in tracking improvements and outcomes. This program is part of Canada's broader efforts to advance clean transportation and align with environmental policy goals, offering not only direct financial support but also strategic guidance for fleet modernization.
