APF: Early Exploration Support Sub-Stream

The Early Exploration Support Sub-Stream of Ontario’s Aboriginal Participation Fund (APF) offers up to $20,000 annually to help Aboriginal communities respond to early mineral exploration notices from the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines (ENDM) and build capacity for education and training related to mining development.

Overview of the APF: Early Exploration Support Sub-Stream program:

The Early Exploration Support Sub-Stream under the Aboriginal Participation Fund (APF) provides targeted financial assistance to Aboriginal communities in Ontario that are experiencing early-stage mineral exploration activity but may not yet qualify for a full-time Mineral Development Advisor (MDA). Its primary goal is to support communities in processing and responding to ENDM notices related to exploration plan and permit applications and to support educational or training initiatives that improve readiness for future mineral development engagement.

  • Eligibility Requirements:
  • Eligible Applicants:
    • Aboriginal communities in Ontario (First Nations, Metis, Tribal Councils, and Aboriginal orgs)
    • Must be in areas of high mineral exploration activity
    • Must have received 29 exploration permit applications in the previous fiscal year
    • Joint applications allowed (must include a Band Council Resolution or Board Motion)
  • Eligible Activities/Expenses Include:
    • Salaries and MERCs for coordination staff
    • Community outreach meetings or workshops
    • Site visit costs, honoraria for Elders
    • Translation/facilitation services
    • Office equipment or rentals linked to the project
    • Utilities, phones, postage, supplies
    • Training related to mining and regulatory processes
